Singing on Pitch

Are you sometimes just a little out of tune?  Do you feel like you’re just a little ‘flat’?

Could be your cheeks have something to do with it.  Watch this short video (under 2 minutes!) for some tips, or read on for more depth!

Singing on Pitch is a combination of listening, focus, and face.  Obviously, you need to be listening to the accompaniment or the singers around you to be in tune with them. It’s the first step I take my clients through if they are having trouble singing in the same key as the music around them. For more information on that topic, read this article or see this tip (coming soon).

The second element of improving your intonation is your mental focus. If you mind is wandering, your pitch might wander.  Clear your mind of distractions, and if something comes in, gently send it on its way in a bubble.  Stay focused on the task at hand.

The most important and quick fix to intonation is in your face.  Your face is the location of two important ‘resonators’ for the voice.  The primary resonator is your mouth- it shapes the sound like

the bell of a horn. Think of the difference in the sound between an oboe and an English horn, for instance.  The secondary resonators in your face are your sinuses. If your pitch is a little flat, chances are so are your cheeks – and your cheeks are right there, on top of your sinuses.  For your sinuses to resonate freely, you have to lift the cheek muscles and tissue up slightly.

Technically, it’s the overtone series that your body creates that indicates whether you sound ‘on pitch’ or not. If your cheeks are flat, chances are your tone is flat, too.

There’s one other bonus to always singing with a slight ‘smile’.  You don’t look like a zombie. It’s a little creepy, like watching the early attempts at digital animation of real people…  Remember “Polar Express” and how the kids faces look flat?  If your face is engaged, your audience will be engaged.  So remember what Annie says, “You’re never fully dressed without a smile!” And keep your intonation spot on!!

Keen and Wail

Music has been part of humanity for decades. For centuries. For millennia. The voice is our power, it is the mirror of the power of creation. “In the beginning was the word.”  Begun from thought, it is what causes creation. If you stay silent, your thought can not manifest.

In times like these, with a major city breathing a sign of relief after an insane attack on a beloved event, we need to use our voices. Our voices can heal us. We must use them.

“But I don’t feel like singing!” I have heard many of my clients protest.

What if you let yourself sing exactly what you feel? No words, no “notes”. Just sound.  UGH. Aaah. Moan. Wail. Keen. In old times, women would gather and keen together after the death of a loved one. What has happened to that beautiful coming together?  We have been silenced. Our physical expression of grief relegated to mere words and ‘talk therapy’ which does little to help.

If you feel helpless, make sound. Sound is a great release of energy that has no where to go, and it usually doesn’t hurt anyone. Go in the bathroom, turn up the music, turn on the shower, and moan, keen, wail. Get that emotional energy out of your body safely with sound.  Maybe even gather some friends to have a wail in!

When I was separated from my husband, I was in deep grief. I also had the benefit, if you will, of conducting a choir.  I chose the Hashivenu, a haunting, wistful Jewish song remembering how times used to be.  The one time we invited a member of our sister Jewish community to come, we are singing this song.  She asked me why I would choose such a song of grief. I had the outlet available to me of a full choir of 16 voices to sing my grief at losing the dream that my life had been.  And it helped me to move forward.

Sing the sad songs. Sing until the tears stream down your face. And then you will be washed clean, and that wave of grief released.   You will feel better, I promise. And you will not be holding on to the fear, the grief, the sorrow. That will make you free.

Tone Deaf or Untrained?

A singer and choral director friend of mine observed on my last blog that people who think they are ‘tone deaf’ are often not.  She said, “They’re tone dumb”.  There is a medical condition that causes an inability to match pitch. That is called amusia, for those of you who would like to know.

Most of the singers that I have worked with who have come to me with a difficulty in matching pitch simply had not had the experience or training needed in order to match pitch correctly.  My father, who I never coached as a professional, used to get a sore rib when he’d sing next to me.  He’d sing some of the melody correctly, and other parts he’d wander off on his own.  I’d elbow him in the ribs.  Well, 15 years later, I went back to church with them on a visit, and wouldn’t you know that for one of the prayers they sang every week, he sang the whole thing on pitch.  And his voice was pretty good!

Another male singer came to me because he had a hole in his range.  He could sing accurately as a baritone, but when he went for the high notes it either flopped into falsetto or turned out a third off, like he was harmonizing with an inaudible melody. We started to work slowly into that zone with a simple humming exercise – building accuracy, strength, and stamina.  His range increased, his ability to hear improved, and his Karaoke performances become even more notable!  Sure enough after 4 months of vocal sessions with me, he auditioned for a lead role in the local community theater, and was cast!

This brings me to one of my most rewarding student/teacher experiences to date. The young man who came in to audition for the role of Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors had an extensive theater resume. He was adorable, in that teen boy-becoming-man way.  He had the emotional feeling of Seymour down even at the audition, and the way he said, “Meatloaf and wahtah”, in his acquired Jersey accent, made me crack up.  We knew he was our Seymour.  But he didn’t list singing experience.  And he didn’t arrive with sheet music.  On call-backs, we asked him to sing “Grow for Me”.  His voice wasn’t sure that it wanted to sing in the same key that we were in.  He had the melody right; just a little off.

We thanked all of the hopeful performers, and sat down to cast the show.

“I think he’s our Seymour, but can you teach him to sing?”  The director asked.

I took a deep breath and centered myself.  Could I?  Would all the tools that I have at my disposal be enough to take him from where he was that night to where he’d need to be on opening?  What would it take?  What contribution could I be?  My inner wisdom was my guide. It said yes.

“Yes, if he’s willing to come for 2 coachings a week.”

The director made the call, and Seymour accepted the conditions that went with his being cast in the role. I later learned that Little Shop is one of his favorite musicals, and that he knows all the songs by heart. I started teasing him about doing a one-man-show version.

We started on Halloween, actually.  The day was magically symbolic – the death of this young man as someone who didn’t know how to sing, and the start of an amazing journey.

I coached the staff and cast members that I needed them to trust me, to suspend their disbelief, and be open to the possibility. They were all happy to do so.  Limitations, judgments, and negative thoughts were not allowed. I talked with his mother (who was, admittedly, nervous) and assured her that he was doing great, which opened her up to the possibilities.  That was one of the keys to our success; when she’d walk in to the studio at the end of his sessions, he’d fall back into the cage of his old habits.  After that conversation with mom, things opened up immensely for him.

The voice is a delicate thing. You can’t ask it to say what you would like if it has things to say on its own. His voice would get ‘stuck’ on a pitch…  we’d tone. Toning is an opportunity for the voice to be where it is, to be a little flat or ‘pitchy’, metallic or scratchy.  You do the physical thing – ask for the pitch, drop the jaw, engage the abdominal muscles, and surrender the outcome. I taught him to listen for the note, then slide up or down to match if he was off.  He’s incorporated that into his performance tools, when I’m not there to cue him to go up or down. His ability to listen and hear the note before he sings it has improved enormously.

Making the transition from using his throat to sing to using his whole instrument has been remarkable.  We incorporated the ‘yawn space’ – the lifted soft palette and cheeks – this rounded out his tone and took us from a square wave to a clear, open tone, even a little vibrato!  I gave him vocalise (the fancy word for vocal exercises) to do that would coordinate his making sound with using his abdominal and intercostal muscles.  He began warming up his voice on a near daily basis.  He began using his body to support the sound, not trying to get the little tiny vocal cords to produce it all.

I will always remember the first day that his tone opened up from the effort of concentration to floating on his body (what you might know as ‘support’.)  All the sudden there was this beautiful tone, this melodic line that brought tears up in my eyes.  Whoa!  Do that in the performances, kid, and you’ll have the audience in tears, too!  His co-star, Audrey, told me the same thing after the first run-thru (we’re 2 weeks from opening).  She’d never heard one of his ‘soliloquy’ sections before. And when he tenderly sang the words, she sat there in the house, jaw loose, teary eyed.  Sure, sometimes he’s a little bit inaccurate, but it goes with our skewed perspective set and our version of the role.  When he stays in that tender-hearted place that our Seymour comes from, he nails it.

Seymour isn’t supposed to be an operatic tenor or a dulcet-toned crooner…  Rick Moranis played the bumbling florist’s assistant in the movie version, and I enjoyed hearing what he did with “Grow for Me”.  When “Suddenly Seymour” came along, I was really disappointed.  As a vocal professional, I can tell when they overdub a voice.   With a few months of lessons with a really excellent voice teacher, you can make great progress. Our Seymour carries the day on his own, from his own amazing dedication and effort – fueled by his desire.

“I’ve always wanted to sing like this,”  the young man tells me at his lessons.  His mother tells me that he’s constantly singing around the house.  I acknowledge her for supporting and encouraging him into the performing arts. He’s a talented comedic actor. He is now building his singing skills.

Bolstered by his success and the support of the cast and crew, he has a whole new avenue of expression ahead of him.  I encouraged him to join his school choir, so that he could gain more experience learning music and matching pitch.  We were talking the other day, sharing the experiences of shows that we’ve seen produced on Broadway or on tour.  I shared that I saw Les Miserables on Broadway in the 1980’s.  “Oh, I’d love to see Les Mis on Broadway!”  “How about being in it?” I gently asked.  His face changed. “Three months ago I never would have even thought of that.  Now…  YEAH!”

I was listening to the Original Broadway soundtrack in the car last weekend, and I kept thinking, “NO! That’s not Seymour’s voice!”  For now, this young Seymour’s my man.

Another musical director without these tools might have written him off.  They would have missed out on an amazing opportunity. But not me.  Not only have I learned more about how a developing voice works, I have gotten to know a dedicated, talented, richly endowed soul. Working with our Seymour has shown me just how powerful and effective my approach to coaching the whole singer are.  It has proven that someone who is willing to put in the time can learn to sing on pitch.  Having the right teacher, of course, makes all the difference!

Singing Myths BUSTED!

What’s a Singing Myth?  Well, it’s one of those lies that people who think they know tell. Or its something that you heard or interpreted along the way as you were learning to sing. It’s also a truth about singing that has a lie attached to it.  How did the myths get propagated?  Well intending people try to help.  I suppose that there are twisted individuals who want to break singers, either physically or spiritually, but that’s a different issue.

Why is this important to me?  Because there are a lot of misconceptions and bad techniques out there, being taught in schools, choirs, and shared among well-meaning people who think they know.  I would like to see truth brought back to singing.  I would like everyone to know that Truth, and be free to sing with their unique instrument in their own unique way.

Myth #1
You can’t “Smile” and Sing

Half-true.  While a true wide grin is going to create a ‘spread’ sound, which works for pop or Broadway, going all the way to a slack face will make you flat (in pitch) and deathly boring to watch.

Truth:  Lift your cheeks slightly.  It will raise your pitch, improve your tone, and make your face look more engaged, thus more interesting to watch.

Myth #2
You Must Sing From Your Diaphragm

False.  The Diaphragm is the UNCONSCIOUS muscle that controls inspiration and exhalation.  What does that mean?  An unconscious muscle is one that you can not consciously control.  It goes and does what it does on its own.  For example, the bicep is a conscious muscle. Go ahead, flex it now. Isolate it, and really give it a good squeeze.  Now try to isolate and flex your diaphragm, or your transverse arytenoid (a muscle of the larynx).  Can’t do it, can you?

Buying the lie that you can sing from an unconscious muscle makes it harder for your body to engage the muscles that actually do control airflow and sound production.  Would you be willing to destroy everything that you created from that, please?  Thank you.

From where do you sing?  That is a much, much deeper question.  Some say the Heart.  I say the Soul.

Myth #3
Only People with Natural Talent can Sing

FALSE. False false falsity false false.  Anyone can sing. Anyone can learn to use their bodies as an instrument, if they are willing to dedicate time and attention to it, just like learning a sport.  At the Embodied Singer, I train people to use their bodies to support effortless sound.  I recently trained a young man who had never really sung before to sing well enough to perform in about 4 months.  I am so pleased with his progress, and it is all because I am teaching him to use his body as his instrument.

If there is something you don’t like about your voice, chances are it’s a habit or a block that can be addressed and resolved.  You can have a voice that you never dreamed possible, if you find the right teacher.

Myth#4
I can’t sing through a phrase. I must have really small lung capacity.

FALSE.  Holding a note or singing a full phrase has nothing to do with lung capacity (unless you’ve got a lung dis-ease).

It is physics.  Air always seeks equilibrium.  If you blow up a balloon, and then open the mouth of it, the air will rush out.  Same goes for your lungs.  When you inhale, the air in your lungs is under pressure. Your job as a singer is to prevent that air from rushing back out.  How?  With your abdominal and intercostal muscles.  Make yourself into a jar.

I’m sure that you’ve heard lots of other falsities about singing…  Go ahead, lay them on me.  Let’s make this the longest singing myth-busting list on the web!

Are you Really “an Alto?”

“Oh, I’m an Alto.”

I hear it all too often.  And my body’s ‘truth meter’ indicates false. Unless you’ve worked with a voice teacher after you reached 35 years of age, and she or he assessed that you are truly an ‘alto,’ then you’re a soprano who doesn’t know it.

What is ‘an alto’, anyway?  In classical singing, there is the contralto vocal ‘fach’ – the fancy German word for classical voice categories. There’s lots of confusion about this among lay people… we’ll deal with the variations on “Soprano” in another blog.  Back to the Alto.  A contralto voice has a dark, covered tone, and can generally cover the range of F below middle C to the G an octave and a fifth above middle C.  That’s right, ladies…  that ‘high G’ that you don’t think you can sing?  Think again!

It would be more accurate to say

“I sing Alto” when referring to what voice part you sing in choir – you can sing in the lower register without vocal fatigue or stress, you are able to hear the harmony parts, and maybe don’t have the polish on your high notes that sopranos have.

In my experience, most women who are singing alto are either mezzo-sopranos, or sopranos who don’t know how to hit high notes yet. You’ve heard the phrase, “Sopranos are a dime a dozen,” right?  Most female voices are soprano.  It has to do with the timbre or tone color of the voice, not the range.

You protest: “I thought it took talent to sing high notes.”

No.

It takes training.

Think about it. If you decide you want to play tennis, do you go buy your racket and some balls, and immediately you can hit an accurate forehand and backhand?  No, not if you’re most people. You sign up for a class or get some coaching. With singing, it’s the same thing. Singing is a muscular activity, and if you don’t ever challenge the muscles to be used in a different way, you won’t ever progress beyond the octave and change range of your youth.  The notes are there – waiting to be accessed.  It’s time to access them!

You have to start simply.  Humming.  Vocalise (vocal patterns repeated at ascending and descending pitch levels) specifically designed to strengthen the hundreds of muscles involved in proper vocal production.

“Hundreds?”

Yes, hundreds. Maybe even thousands.  From your feet to your hips to your abdominal wall, through your rib cage to your larynx (the one most people focus on) to your tongue, the inside of your mouth, your cheeks and your eyes.  You can do more than you thought possible, I bet.  Won’t you come find out?

Staying Healthy for Singers

Tips and Tools for Staying Healthy

There are a few obvious guidelines, like drink lots of water, get plenty of rest or sleep, and eat whole foods.  Listen to your body when it is trying to tell you something!  Most importantly, it is your number one job to keep yourself healthy and protect your instrument. Especially if you are rehearsing for a play, concert, or performance.

There are a few things you can do that will help your body withstand and fight off ‘germs’ if and when you come in contact with them.

General Health

  1. Take Vitamin D.  Not just any Vitamin D.  A high-quality supplement from Thorne Research.  You might spend more, but you will receive much more benefit. My Naturopath recommends 5,000ius daily, more for people in northern climates.  Why Vitamin D?  According to Dr. Rick Marschall, ND, Vitamin D is actually a hormone produced by the body when it interacts with sunlight. It helps to regulate metabolism, neurotransmitters, and many other body systems.  See if your mood doesn’t improve when you start taking it, too!  Curious about your current blood levels of Vitamin D?  You can get an inexpensive test-kit here:  http://www.grassrootshealth.net/ and see how much Vitamin D your body will require to get your levels into the optimum range.
  2. Use Cleanwell thyme oil hand sanitizer, or Thieves oil hand soap or sanitizer. These natural oils are more effective at killing germs than rubbing alcohol, and smell better, too!
  3. Sleep when you’re tired, drink water when you’re thirsty, and listen to your body!
  4. Stay home if you’re feeling a little down, and start taking the supplements listed below!
  5. Boost your immune system with Arabinogalactins.  We’re not talking about video games, here.  These are essential sugars found in the Larch tree.  You can get a powder, IAG, or capsule:  ARA-Plus.  This also has quercetin, a natural decongestant.
  6. Surround yourself with white-gold light every day.
  7. Use real mineral salt instead of ‘table salt’ – either sea salt, Himalayan salt, or another high quality type.  I keep it in my purse in case I start to feel tired.  Just a little pinch will pick me right back up.

First Exposure

If you know you’ve been exposed to the flu or a cold, take immediate action!  Wash your hands and face with hot soapy water, and use the hand sanitizers mentioned above.  Plan to get more sleep and drink more water.  Start listening to the symptoms early, and take immediate action so that you can head off the infection before it takes root.  Use the Sore Throat remedy below, as well.

  1. Take Garlic!  Not just any garlic.  Alli-Ultra.  (buy locally at Natural Healing Clinic!) One capsule at first niggling sensation of swollen glands or scratchy throat and it will keep an infection from catching hold.  Take one to three caps a day until the symptoms are gone.  You might want to pair this with a high quality pro-biotic. No, you can’t just eat yogurt!
  2. Take Emergen-C packets (up to 4 a day) or other Vitamin C boosters.
  3. What about Echinacea and Goldenseal?  They will help you in that pinch, but you can’t keep taking them all the time.  Ask your body if they will help you this time.
  4. Use your powerful self!  In your head, say, “Return to sender” whenever someone sneezes or coughs near you, or someone tries to tell you that ‘you will get…’  No, you do not have to.

As SOON as I feel not quite right, I take 1 each Alli-Ultra and ARA-Plus.  I’ll keep taking it twice a day until I feel totally better.  If the infection has gotten a hold, I do three times a day. 

How do you know how much of something to take?  Ask your body.  Never asked your body before?  Close your eyes and focus on your heart.  Now, think of something that you absolutely know that you enjoy, that makes your body feel good.  How does your heart feel now?  Some people say lighter, some see a change in color, some people might feel a tingle.  It’s your body.  Make a note of that feeling.  Good.  Bring yourself back to neutral.  Now, think of something that you hate, like Lima Beans or dirty socks.  How does your heart feel now?  Heavy? Black? Numb?  Good. Make a note of that.  Ask your body to go back to neutral.  Get some practice with this, use it on what to wear, what to eat, etc.

What does this have to do with staying healthy?  Well, it has to do with everything.  Listening to your body is paramount to becoming the best singer you can be.  Hold a bottle of pills in your hand. Does your heart feel heavy or light?  If it’s light, it’s the right one for you.  Then hold one capsule, then two…  see how many your body says is the right number for you.  (You should consult a physician before taking more than 5 of anything at a time.)

Sore Throat

Another great thing to keep in your fridge is a jar with raw honey, a couple of lemon slices or wedges, and a couple of slices of ginger root.  Stir it up so that the lemon and ginger can interact with the honey.  Let it sit a while, then refrigerate.  Then take a teaspoon straight, mixed in cool water, or stirred in hot water as a tea.  You can also gargle this concoction to kill the bacteria that might be invading your throat.  Use a clean spoon every time and keep it tightly sealed. You can keep adding raw honey and replace the lemon slices, or use it up and start fresh every month or so.  If it starts to smell ‘off’ or taste a little funny, start over.

Another great throat remedy is to gargle warm salt water.  Distilled water is best.  Mix 1 cup water with 1 tablespoon sea salt.  Gargle as much as you need to!  Careful not to swallow!

My favorite lozenges are Thayer’s Slippery Elm.  They come in a couple of flavors, and actually contain an herb that produces a protective film over the mucus membranes of the throat. Very important for singers!  Beware of harsh brands that strip the mucus and cover you with sugar instead… Sugar only feeds the bacteria and viruses!  Just Say No!
